Yeah. Pressing the button creates the madman who wants to cut off your legs., therefore. Don't press the button, keep your legs and thumbs.

Pressing the button guarantees that your legs don't get cut off, but not pressing it gives you a chance of not losing anything.

It never said the madman would attack if you don't press the button, only that they will if you do press it. Therefore, I will not press the button, and I will keep my legs and my thumbs.
