Just invent it then have other people use it so no one gets slapped. Also if you really do want to use it then have another person copy the technology and make another machine then use that one.

It would probably be a person that was historically significant in the year you choose to visit.. maybe just don't do it so often. Coming back to the present will get you slapped too I bet.
