See simply don't shape shift at all. Won't hurt. Neither does it hurt to keep the power for extreme circumstances. Say you"ve to get away form a criminal You get a 10 second time window before getting caught and maybe killed. Won't it come in handy?

This has no downside, only a restriction. Assuming the shapeshifting ability comes at will, that is. For what it may mean, I know very little of Supernatural.
