I'd use it to get out of awkward situations. Someone harassing you? Black out. Make them feel bad. People arguing about a sensitive subject? Black out. It's the best escape plan.

Okay, I'm from the future. You can create anything, right? So just create a magical device that have the ability to copy itself and with downsides proof. When the original item is gone, you still have the copy of device you"ve created.

I can still use it so if I use it in self defense no biggie. Im not sure if happiness would be brought if I drop an anvil on someones head but maybe I would be happy on the fact that it works? if so first time I use it it will be on a solo attacker to lessen the chances next time I use it
