If you live a life where you get tons of important memories, losing one is not that bad in case you'll have to use the ability. So basically live your fullest before activating it.

At will. so you'll still have the ability even if you say no now. If people you love get an illness, wouldn't curing it be worth losing a piece of your memory? Even if you never use the ability, there's no downside to pressing the button.
